Artificial Identity Crisis

The paper thin line between generated and captured images.

the man(?) in the mirror (DALL·E 3)

Happy Monday!

It is my great joy this morning to bring to you the inaugural edition of ai for normal people.

To those of you who have been following along since day one, THANK YOU – if today is your first time reading with us, welcome to the party! 🎉

We’ve previously discussed some of the most powerful AI image generation models available today, specifically focusing on getting the most out of OpenAI’s DALL·E 3. Today I want to discuss another model that needs to be on your radar: Midjourney by Stable Diffusion.

Before we get into discussing the model itself, here’s a quick pop quiz:

Which of these ‘selfies’ is actually an AI-generated image I made using Midjourney?

That’s ok, take your time. Zoom in if you need to. Don’t rush this.

Think you’ve got it? Let’s see…

The correct answer is all of the above.

You read that correctly. All four of these images came from a single prompt I put into Midjourney yesterday afternoon:

If you didn’t already, now you know that the gap between generated and captured images is growing paper thin, and I would imagine that before the year’s end we will see that line disappear altogether. What a time to be alive, right? 😅

That leads me to this week’s topic in-focus: Digital Identity and AI.

With it being an election year for us in the States, it’s more important than ever that you begin to develop a robust understanding of the progress that’s happening in the generative AI space. Even if this understanding doesn’t guarantee you’ll never be duped, at the very least you can be aware that these kinds of images are possible. And as always, my belief is that the best way to understand these models is to use them for yourself. That’s why tomorrow, we’ll hit the ground running with setting up your own Midjourney account.

That’s all for today!

Onward,

Brady Fowlkes
