AI Killed the Streaming Star

A whole new meaning to electronic music.

Good Morning + Happy Wednesday, Normal People!

For those of you just joining us, this week we’ve highlighted the incredibly realistic photos today’s AI models can generate and how to start creating your own. Today I want to make a shift in senses – from sight to sound.

To start, a scenario I’d like you to consider:

You find yourself scrolling through Spotify and come across a new song you love, but you don’t recognize the artist. You tap on the artist profile and see the usual: an artistically vague profile picture and a cover image of blurry colors. You scroll down to the artist description to try and learn more only to discover that you song you just saved was entirely AI-generated.

Thinking these sound more like an episode of Black Mirror than a day in your real life? WARNING: Futures in question may be closer than they appear.

The idea of AI-generated content impacting the music we listen to is already happening. Last summer, Drake beefed with AI over a song that used a clone of his voice. In that instance, AI was simply manipulating one voice to sound like another.

Soon, we could start to see artists emerge that are entirely AI-generated, with everything from their physical appearance to the voice and music featured in their songs to be created using generative AI models. One such artist, Anna Indiana, is doing just that – and it’s… interesting.

Music these models create (if you can even call it that?) might be laughable for now, but it will only take a handful of labels noticing the interest and opportunity in this “AI artists” for these to move to the mainstream.

For today’s sendoff, here’s a piece of music that only AI could have made possible: “Shake It Off” by Kanye West.

Onward,

Brady Fowlkes
